Emerging from the ground with a forward and upward vigour, Change is a 5 meter tall bronze sculpture imbued with a figurative quality which leans on the ideas ofHeraclitus, the pre-Socratic Greek philosopher who was famous for his insistence on “ever-present change” being the fundamental essence of the universe.
Bound to the earth the sculpture appears to continue below ground, symbolic of a past buried beneath, fixed in place and unmovable. The top most torus shape, is pulled upward and onward, defying gravity, suggesting the presence of an unobservable universal force; an inherent energy that is constantly advancing towards the future. The central link, connecting past and future, is pulled open by these competing forces, a reminder to remain open to the power of now; the state of constant change and infinite possibility. The viewer is invited to let go of the past, be open to the present, and have hope in the future.
As stated in the famous sayings: “No man never steps in the same river twice” and “The only thing that is constant is change”, Robb set out to reinforce the notion of constant change through his decision to work with bronze and render the sculpture with a mirror polished finish in the knowledge that overtime the bronze would oxidise and develop its own natural patina.
