Jephson Robb is a Scottish artist and designer devoted to sculpture whoose work can be found in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Jephson's oeuvre encompasses site-specific sculpture, unique artworks, editions and furniture. Jephson describes his approach to sculpture, as "serious play", a process that goes beyond simply having fun, itself an oxymoron that reflects Jephson's fascination with the tensions that arise from the dualistic nature of life. Through his work, Jephson explores the third space, where opposite forces are simultaneously at play.
Jephson's seminal sculpture, Cries and Whispers, explores issues of life and death, as well as love and loss. Cries and Whispers was included in the exhibitions Safe: Design Takes on Risk (2005/2006) and in Rough Cut: Design Takes A Sharpe Edge (2008/2010) at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Cries and Whispers is part of the museum's permanent collection.
Jephson's site-specific sculptures and installations are concerned with, the material and immaterial, Golden Age, terrestrisl and celestial, Wonder, past and future, Change, light and dark, Sun and Moon, while Two Hearts, Love and Kisses, and Embrace consider the pleasure and pain of love. Jephson's memorial sculpture Known and Unknown which addresses truth and lies was shortlisted for the UK Marsh Award for Excellence in Public Sculpture in 2017. When working on a site-specific sculpture, Jephson considers the setting, a specific building or site, as well as the historical, social and cultural context surrounding the commission.
In 2019 The Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society, Glasgow held Primary, a solo exhibition of Jephson's studio work. On show were two groups of precise geometric sculptures Primary Forms, painted and veneered MDF and Shapes of Light, a series of bronze and stainless sculptures which play with reflection and light.
